2026 Volvo XC40 vs 2026 BMW X1

Serving Chamblee, GA

Compact luxury crossover SUVs, such as the Volvo XC40 and the BMW X1, initially hold comparable appeal. However, these models are individualized in striking ways to deliver a different ownership experience. The 2026 XC40 introduces several notable updates, including enhancements to performance, features, and trim levels. The 2026 X1 is unchanged.

Performance

In 2026, the Volvo XC40 is available with standard front-wheel drive for the first time with the B4 engine. This engine is standard for the first two trim levels. It is a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged unit, producing 194 horsepower. The top two trim levels feature the B5 engine, an upgraded, 247-horsepower variant of the B4. This system has all-wheel drive. The Volvo XC40 is capable of towing up to 3,500 pounds.

The first of the X1's two trim levels is the xDrive28i. It features a turbo 2.0-liter engine with all-wheel drive. The M35i xDrive comes with an upgraded version of this four-cylinder engine and features all-wheel drive. The BMW X1 is not rated for towing, and BMW does not recommend or support towing a trailer.

Appearance

The Volvo XC40 Black Edition is new for the 2026 model year. The Black Edition has blacked-out styling, including across the badging, 20-inch alloy wheels, and a contrasting roof. Overall, the model is designed with the clean Scandinavian styling that the Volvo brand is recognized for. It shows off standout elements like Thor's hammer LED headlights, three-pronged air inlets on the nose, and unique, pinwheel-style wheels.

The BMW X1 retains its chiseled sides and edgy front end, unchanged since 2025. The angled headlights feature a pair of bent LED bars, and this angled design is also reflected in the tall air inlets. The traditional BMW grille takes a detour with a boxier design.

Features

The 2026 XC40 now features parking sensors and adaptive cruise control as standard. The infotainment system has also been improved to be more responsive. The XC40 also offers additional features, including Pilot Assist, leather upholstery, an air purifier, a Harman Kardon premium sound system, a wireless device charger, driver's memory settings, heated seats, a Google-based operating system, and a 9-inch infotainment system screen, among others.

The X1's base features are a power liftgate, a digital infotainment system screen, ambient lights, heated front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, a dual-zone auto climate control system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a navigation system.
