A lot of great technology is in the works these days, folks. Improving on hybrid and all-electric technology is a given, alternative fuels like hydrogen fuel cells are being developed, and autonomous driving is nearly a reality; we truly have a lot to look forward to in the coming years. But there's a technology that many tend to overlook as being so well-established, it's not worth changing: the car battery. Well, Volvo has taken it in their hands to see the battery in a new light, and they've made some amazing technological leaps.
Body panels are there for a number of reasons, such as to help protect you and, of course, make your vehicle look like an actual vehicle, but what if they could do something new? Utilizing carbon fiber and super capacitors, Volvo has managed to replace body panels with batteries that can provide enough energy for an S80 model's entire 12-volt power system while charging faster than a traditional battery.
On the Volvo S80 guinea pig, the plenum cover was replaced with one of these batteries and it both provides protection as well as power. But it doesn't have to be this single panel; the automaker has stated that the decklid, roof, and even door panels can be turned into batteries. This is great news for the future of electric vehicles that rely on battery power to get up and go.
The technology, however, is still very new and being tested, so it will certainly be while before we see it in commercial vehicles, if ever. Stay tuned in to the blog for more information as it comes.
